Hot-dip Galvanizing
Hot-dip galvanizing is a process used to coat metal with a layer of zinc to prevent rust and corrosion. The process involves immersing the metal into a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of around 450°C. The high temperature causes a reaction between the zinc and the metal, resulting in a metallurgically bonded coating that is tightly adhered to the surface of the metal. The thickness of the zinc layer can be controlled by the immersion time and the zinc temperature, and it typically ranges from 50-200 microns. Zinc Sacrificial Protection
The primary reason why galvanized metal is resistant to rust and corrosion is due to the properties of zinc. Zinc is a highly reactive metal, which means that it readily reacts with oxygen and water molecules in the air to form a thin layer of zinc oxide on the surface of the metal. This layer of zinc oxide acts as a barrier, preventing oxygen and water molecules from reaching the underlying metal and causing it to rust. This process is known as sacrificial protection, where the zinc layer corrodes instead of the underlying metal.
