Zinc Coated Steel Plate

Cold rolled steel sheet with zinc coacting

Overview

Zinc coated steel plate, also known as galvanized steel plate, is a popular material in a wide range of industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance and durability. The process of coating steel with zinc involves dipping it into a bath of molten zinc, which creates a layer of zinc on the surface of the steel. The zinc coating provides a barrier between the steel and the environment, preventing rust and other forms of corrosion from forming.

Advantages

Zinc-coated steel plate provides numerous advantages over other types of metal plates. It is more cost-effective than stainless steel and has superior corrosion resistance compared to plain steel. Zinc-coated steel is also stronger and more durable than aluminum, making it a preferred material for structural applications. In addition to its primary function of preventing corrosion, zinc-coated steel plate can be painted with ease, providing greater customization and aesthetic options. Moreover, it is an eco-friendly choice, being 100% recyclable and can be reused indefinitely.

Application

It can be used in a wide range of applications, from construction and infrastructure to automotive manufacturing and consumer goods. It is commonly used to make pipes, tubes, roofing materials, and other building components. Its strength, durability, and corrosion resistance make it an ideal material for structural applications where strength and durability are required.

Parameters

Size:

Galvanized steel sheet thickness can be measured and expressed in two ways. TCT, or total coated thickness, represents the overall thickness of the sheet, including both the base metal (cold-rolled steel) and the zinc coating. On the other hand, BMT, or base metal thickness, only takes into account the thickness of the cold-rolled steel. Generally, galvanized steel sheets have a thickness ranging from 0.12 mm to 3.0 mm. Thinner sheets are typically more expensive as they require more time and coating per ton of steel during the manufacturing process.

Galvanized steel sheets come in standard widths of 914mm (3 feet), 1000mm, 1219mm (4 feet), and 1250mm. The most commonly stocked thicknesses for galvanized steel range from 0.25mm to 3.0mm, with regular widths of 1219mm and 1250mm. Although less common, sizes of 914mm and 1500mm are also available. Additionally, customized sizes of galvanized steel sheets can be produced, with widths ranging from 600mm to 1500mm.

Zinc Coated:

The thickness of a zinc layer on a galvanized sheet is commonly measured in grams per square meter (g/m²), where the weight of zinc per unit area corresponds to the thickness of the coating. A higher weight per square meter indicates a thicker layer of zinc, which in turn provides better protection against corrosion. Galvanized sheets are available in a range of zinc coating weights, typically ranging from 20g/m² to 450g/m².

Galvanized sheets with different coating weights have various applications. For instance, lower weight coatings, such as 20g/m², are suitable for indoor applications where minimal protection against rust is needed. Higher weight coatings, such as 275g/m², are typically used for outdoor applications, where harsh environmental conditions require increased protection against rust and corrosion. Additionally, galvanized sheets with intermediate coating weights, such as 60g/m² or 120g/m², are frequently used in the construction industry for applications such as roofing and siding.

big spangle

Spangle:

Zinc coated steel sheets come in different spangle patterns, which refer to the visible crystalline structures on the surface of the material. These spangles are formed during the galvanization process and can have varying sizes and shapes, including regular, minimized, or zero spangle.

Regular spangle is the most common pattern and has a large, distinct crystal structure that gives the steel sheet a shiny appearance.

Minimized spangle, on the other hand, has a smaller crystal structure, resulting in a more subdued, matte finish.

Zero spangle refers to a galvanized steel sheet with no visible crystal structure, providing a smooth, polished appearance.

Passivation:

Zinc coated steel sheets can undergo various types of passivation treatments, which involve applying a thin layer of chemical compounds to the surface of the material to improve its corrosion resistance and durability. Different passivation treatments can result in distinct appearances and properties of the galvanized steel sheet.

One common type of passivation is chromate passivation, which involves treating the zinc-coated surface with a chromate solution. This results in a yellow or iridescent appearance and provides excellent corrosion protection.

Another type of passivation is phosphating, which involves treating the zinc-coated surface with a phosphate solution. This results in a dull gray or black appearance and provides superior paint adhesion and corrosion protection.

Organic passivation is also an option, which involves applying a protective layer of organic compounds to the surface of the zinc coating. This results in a clear or slightly tinted appearance and provides good corrosion protection.

Production Standards

Production standards for zinc coated steel plate vary around the world, with different countries and regions having their own requirements and regulations. In the European Union, for example, there are a set of standards known as EN 10346, which specify the requirements for continuously hot-dip coated steel flat products for cold forming. In the United States, ASTM International has a set of standards for zinc coated steel products, including ASTM A653 for steel sheet, zinc-coated (galvanized) or zinc-iron alloy-coated (galvannealed) by the hot-dip process.
